CASTLES
Scattered in towns and on remoter crags romantic castle ruins and stately mansions hint at the area’s turbulent past and the power of wealthy estate owners. From the English border to the westernmost reaches of the National Park enigmatic medieval castle ruins tell of power struggles between barons, given land in Wales by William the Conquerer, and Welsh princes. More recent intact grand buildings remind us that wealthy estate owners and industrialists built opulent mansions to reflect their power and wealth.
