Walk Grade
(5 = Hardest)
This walk offers a castle and woodland in one and what a little verdant gem it is! Venture along the track through Coed y Castell – the wood of the castle – as it is known in Welsh and you will be rewarded with the wonderful experience of walking through a birdsong filled woodland. This is a grade 3 walk: Routes with occasional long or steep gradients, a narrow path in places, poor surfaces and kissing gates or stiles. There are no seats. The carpark at Carreg Cennen Castle is open 9.30am-6pm every day, apart from Christmas Day.
Having visited the castle which rises dramatically above the green clouds of the woodland canopy follow the gently sloping track downwards. So much wildlife thrives in this patch of sessile oak woodland it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The plentiful buzzing insects which teem on these old oak trees attract many birds during the daytime and bats during the night-time. You may also spot alder, hazel and ash growing amongst the oaks. Thankfully no sheep graze the woodland and the bracken is controlled and so young saplings get a chance to grow into mature trees to provide a home for all the wildlife. Pick your time of year for a visit: spring and summer for the beautiful woodland flowers or the autumn for rich bronze colours.
