Exploring Talgarth with Black Mountains Preserves & Tegfan Garden Suites
Very much an Ambassador for the Bannau Brycheiniog Helen Dunne would like to share her experiences and love of the area with you. Not only does she have a delightful property to escape to for rural tranquillity but she happens to make some of the best jams & preserves from the produce from the local area we can find.
Helen says
Beauty is so easy to find in the Black Mountains & Bannau Brycheiniog, from dawn to dusk; even when it’s dark.
Bannau Brycheiniog, formally known as the Brecon Beacons National Park, is a mountainous region and 1 of only 18 sites in the World with Dark Sky Status, making it the perfect destination for stargazers.
The heavens are blessed with some of the UK’s darkest skies so prepare to be dazzled. In total peace and quiet you can sit back and enjoy your very own private light show.
On a clear night you can see the Milky Way, major constellations, bright nebulas and even meteor showers. Llangorse Lake, Hay Bluff and Llanthony Priory are known to be some of the best stargazing viewing spots across Bannau Brycheiniog and all on the doorstep of Tegfan Garden Suite making it the perfect spot to stay to enjoy the very best stars.
Alternatively if you after a bit of history, facing Mynydd Troed in the Black Mountains, Tegfan Garden Suite is located within the Talgarth Conservation Area and is only 1.5 miles from Bronllys Castle.
One of the many castles with the BBNP. Did you know that Wales is believed to have more castles per square mile than any other country in the world? Talgarth bordering with Bronllys is a small traditional market town where the little rivers Enig and Ellywe flow from the Black Mountains and onwards towards the River Wye.
Talgarth Mill, a fully working 18th Century flour mill embraces the river flow and produces quality flour used by #poblbakery for their sublime bakes.
The very best of nature surrounds Helen’s delightful property Tegfan Garden Suite with Pwll-y-Wrach Nature Reserve, just round the corner. Look in awe at a 30ft waterfall and pond known as Pwll-y-Wrach – the Witches Pond. The local area offers endless options for being at one with nature. Keen walkers can set off from the door and walk to Llangorse lake (the largest natural lake in Wales). Alternatively explore Dan-yr-Ogof caves, climb the summit of southern Britain’s highest mountain Pen-Y-Fan, embrace the history and scale of the 11th century Llanthony Priory or brave The Big Pit at the Blaenavon World Heritage Site.
Just a 15-minute drive from Tegfan Garden Suite in either direction is Brecon and Hay-on-Wye with regular farmers markets and local places of interest and culture, including the Grade 1 listed Brecon Cathedral. Brecon Theatr Brycheiniog, offering a wide variety of shows is situated on the banks of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal, Enjoy a canal boat cruise or a gentle tow path walk.
Hay-on-Wye known locally as Hay, is a market town and with over twenty bookshops, it is often described as a “town of books” it is both the National Book Town of Wales and the site of the annual Hay Festival. Shopping in Hay-on-Wye is fun with many independent retailers offering quirky to practical gifts with local artisan businesses offering their handmade wares during the weekly Thursday market.
