LAKES AND WATERWAYS

Abundant mountain streams, miles of rivers and canal, scenic lakes including South Wales’ largest, and reservoirs all make for an area overflowing with watery gems.

LAKES AND WATERWAYS

By experiencing our lovely lakes and wonderful waterways you’ll be benefiting from our plentiful supply of rain! What better way of doing this than by hiring a boat or pedalo, cycling along a towpath, strolling along a riverbank or lakeside, watching water birds or picnicking in a lakeside meadow. If you’d like something a little more exciting how about going windsurfing or white water kayaking? Come and enjoy one of the most powerful forces to shape our stunning landscape – this living, moving element of the Brecon Beacons.

Looking after yourself and the National Park

Help look after the National Park and its wildlife and respect other people's enjoyment by following the Countryside Code.

Also:

  • never swim in reservoirs or the canal and jump into unfamiliar waters
  • keep well clear of water that is coloured brown or red – it shows the waterway is swollen with rain
  • wear boots or shoes with a strong grip near rivers or waterfalls – slippery rocks and uneven ground can be lethal
  • avoid wading across rivers
  • beware of strong winds which can produce sharp choppy waves on open water
  • keep away from water which appears to be frozen – it may only be wafer thin.
