EIGHT THINGS TO ENJOY AFTER DARK
Most people come to the Brecon Beacons to make the most of our fabulous countryside. But when the day comes to an end, the fun doesn't have to stop.
1. Listen out for the nightlife
Dusk can be a busy time in the natural world. As the sun sinks, starlings call and swirl in the sky before settling down to roost, while owls take flight and nightjars hunt for insects, churring softly. Walk along a waterside path on a summer’s evening, and you may hear otters whistling to each other. To find out more, visit our pages on wildlife-watching.
2. Toast marshmallows over a campfire
Rekindle your happiest childhood memories by building a blaze (in a place where it’s safe to do so) and snuggling up with the ones you love. To find out more, visit our page on camping.
3. Play Murder in the Dark in a historic cottage
Tucked away in the Brecon Beacons are wonderful, characterful holiday cottages which will provide all the atmosphere you need for an evening of old-fashioned, spooky parlour games. Draw the curtains, light a few candles, and the stage is set. To find out more, visit our page on self-catering accommodation.
4. Treat yourself to dinner at an award-winning restaurant
Chances are you’ll have heard a bit about our reputation as a gourmet destination. And chances are, come the evening, you’ll have worked up a bit of an appetite. So now’s the time to put that reputation to the test. To find out more, visit our page places to eat and drink.
5. Catch a great show in Brecon
There’s plenty to see at Theatre Brycheiniog. It hosts theatre, dance, comedy and tribute bands. To find out more, visit our page on performing arts and entertainment.
6. Hear top-ranking jazz in Brecon
If you’re lucky enough to be in Brecon in early August, be sure to soak up some cool tunes at the Brecon Jazz Festival. Recent headliners have included Jools Holland and Acker Bilk. You’ll have to be quick off the mark, though – many events sell out in advance. To find out more, visit our page on festivals.
7. Enjoy a pint with the locals at a cosy pub
What better way to wind up an action-packed day of hillwalking, canoeing or mountain biking than by relaxing in a traditional pub, with a pint of real ale in hand? Be our guest. To find out more, visit our page on pubs and inns.
8. Go stargazing in our Dark Sky Reserve
Our heavens are blessed with some of the UK’s darkest skies. Watch out for stargazing events, where you can peer at meteor showers through a telescope. Or just step outside, look up, and prepare to be dazzled. To find out more, visit our pages on stargazing.
