Caeau Ty Mawr are wildflower-rich fields on the western shore of Llangors Lake and are part of one of the most important wildlife areas in Wales, to hear why these small fields are so important download the track here.
The wildflower-rich fields are owned by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and managed in partnership with a tenant farmer although the day to day management is done by grazing ponies! To hear how the ponies help create time and space for wildflowers download the track here.
In the Summer months the fields come alive with dragonflies and butterflies foraging among the plants but, did you know you can also see Dragons, Damsels and Devils! To find out more download the track here.
Visiting the fields
You can visit Caeau Ty Mawr by taking a short (1.2km) stroll across open fields following a popular public footpath. The footpath crosses through Caeau Ty Mawr, allowing visitors to take in the sights and sounds of this wildlife-rich site. Please note there is no public access off the path. If you wish to visit the bird hide on the Southern Shore, continue your walk through Caeau Ty Mawr and into the fields beyond, a distance of approximately 750m. From the hide you may glimpse some of the birds that visit the Lake and its fringes as well as discovering more about some of our seasonal visitors.
Sections of this lakeside path are susceptible to seasonal flooding during the Winter which can make the path impassable. Although this is inconvenient for us, the flooding provides perfect conditions for some of the interesting plants and animals to thrive in. To learn more about these download the track here.
How to get there
There is plenty of parking at Llangors Common, just follow the brown road signs to the lake from Llangorse village. Once you enter the common, pass the Caravan Park reception and shop on your left and then park in the carpark on your left. Check out the orientation map and way marking signs to ensure you set off on the right path.
